Testing Ubuntu Touch Images (now with raring!)

Consider this text your giant disclaimer. Just a reminder these images are not intended for end-users; please don't go flashing your device thinking you'll have a replacement for android. These images are intended for developers, enthusiasts and testers who want to help. If this describes you, please read on!

I'm happy to announce the ubuntu touch images are now available for testing on the isotracker. And further, the images are now raring based! As such, the ubuntu touch team is asking for folks to try out the new images on there devices and ensure they are no regressions or other issues.




There are 4 product listings representing each of the officially supported devices; grouper (nexus 7), maguro (galaxy nexus), mako (nexus 4), and manta (nexus 10). You can help by installing the new images following the installation instructions, and then reporting your results on the isotracker. If your device has never run a developer preview image for ubuntu touch, you might need to read and follow the steps on the touch wiki first.


There are handy links for download and bug information at the top of the testcases to help you out. If you do find a bug, please use the instructions to report it and add it to your result. Never used the tracker before? Take a look at this handy guide or watch the youtube version.

Once all the kinks and potential issues are worked out (your feedback requested!) the raring based images will become the default, and moving forward, the team will continue to provide daily images and participate in testing milestones as part of the 's' cycle.

    is this image More functional than the developer preview?

      If by functional you mean you can run some applications, then yes. Michael has been blogging about them here: http://mhall119.com/2013/04/announcing-the-ubuntu-sdk-apps-collection/. The image itself comes with the core apps, which are also at varying degrees of usefulness.

      I believe the team is still working on images for the CDMA and LTE variants of the galaxy nexus.

      I'm staying hopeful we'll see one soon... someone on XDA had an alpha image but there was no network support.

    Is the kernel compiled with VT switching so that I can run (framebuffer) X11 server on it at least? The choice of apps is really small, and since you don't support dualboot, it means I would dedicate the expensive Nexus 10 to be the demo of new dialers...

      Things are actually landing quite fast -- for instance the file manager, terminal apps, and document viewers are hitting the ppa very very soon. These have really open the device up as a usable device -- not a demo. I've used multiboot on the nexus 7 to dual boot, I've not heard of a dual boot solution for nexus 10 however.

    WiFi networking not working in this version for the Galaxy Nexus? I recall it working for the Developer's Preview. Or do I have to reinstall the image?

    When I follow the download instructions from ISO tracker I get this error from the last command. Where have I gone wrong?

      zorkerz, where you able to get this to work? Have a look at the options here for more detailed help from the team:

      That said, it looks like python couldn't import raring_settings.py -- meaning, raring_settings.py couldn't be found. Does the file exist? Did you grab it with wget? Are you running the command from the directory you downloaded it?

      I mean, in the case of non specific developpment of an app for Ubuntu Touch, will a possibilty exist for using apps developped for Android, directly or through something like an emulator or whatever else solution?
